I teach systematic theology, Uniting Church studies, and ethics. My recent research interests have been in * Theological education * Ethics * The Basis of Union of the Uniting Church * Public Theology I have recently completed the Doctor of Education program at Flinders University, concentrating on different aspects theological education in the Uniting Church.
The Story So Far
I came to South Australia in 1989 to take up an appointment as lecturer in systematic theology at Parkin-Wesley College. I was appointed as Principal of Parkin-Wesley College in 2001. I came to Adelaide from Sydney, where I'd been the Uniting Church's chaplain to Sydney University and the minister of the Wesley College Chapel Parish. For several years before that I had lived and worked in Scotland where I was a postgraduate student at the University of St Andrews and the assistant minister in a Church of Scotland parish in Leven, Fife. I was ordained in that parish in Scotland. But I am a Queenslander by birth. I was born in the RFDS Base Hospital in Charleville in 1958. After attending state primary schools in Charleville and Toowong, and Brisbane Boys' College for high school, I was educated at the University of Queensland and Trinity Theological College, Brisbane.
I was the founding Director of the Centre for Theology, Science and Culture from 1999 until 2005. I was the chairperson of the SA Council on Reproductive Technology from 1996 until 2005. I'm a member of the Advisory Board of the Ethics Centre of South Australia and the chairperson of the research ethics committee of the Adelaide College of Divinity.
I am fortnightly guest on ABC Local Radio 891 "Mornings", leading talk-back conversations on spirituality, ethics and society. I write a regular column in Australian Leadership, focussing on questions of public and practical theology that emerge through my involvement with the wider South Australian community. I chair the Uniting Church's national Church Polity Reference Committee and I'm also a member of its Doctrine Working Group. In July 2009 I was chosen to be the next President of the national Assemby of the Uniting Church in Australia. I will be installed in that position in July 2012 and will serve full-time for three years. In the meantime, as President-elect, I am learning all I can to help me be effective in that role - with the help of the President, the Ex-President and the General Secretary of the Assembly.
